3rd International Symposium on Lipid Oxidation and Antioxidants
10 - 12 June 2020

Dear colleagues,
It is our pleasure to be hosting the 3rd International Symposium on Lipid Oxidation and Antioxidants (ISLOA) organized by Euro Fed Lipid, which will be held in Vigo, Spain, from 10-12 June 2020. Lipid oxidation and its control by antioxidants has been analyzed and investigated for years. The topic is fascinating and highly dynamic, and presentation of recent work in the field – we do hope you can come and share yours with all of us – will provide a state-of-the-art knowledge that will make the meeting a great opportunity that you should not miss for discussion of theoretical and practical aspects of both lipid oxidation and its control in different environments, creating an atmosphere that will provide new ideas and research strategies.

In attempting to provide an appropriate environment for showing the progress, exchanging ideas, establishing new collaborations, and try to solve common problems and challenges, the congress will cover, among others, the following topics

  • - Antioxidant and lipid oxidation evaluation methods
  • - Elucidation of lipid oxidation and antioxidant mechanisms
  • - Lipid oxidation in multiphase and complex systems
  • - Control of lipid oxidation
  • - Protein and lipid co-oxidation
  • - Oxidative stress and human health
  • - Nutritional and physiological effects of oxidized lipids and antioxidants
  • - Design, sourcing and applications of plant and marine antioxidants

The symposium will be hosted by the University of Vigo, a very dynamic University with three campuses and more than 22000 students from all around the world. Vigo is the most important city in the northwest of Spain, pretty close to the Portuguese border. Vigo is a unique city with a perfect blend of a traditional and historic location with an active city, beaches and mountains, industry and innovation. The modern Vigo´s Airport (VGO), located 15 km away from Vigo, is connected with Madrid, Barcelona and other important cities in Spain. Vigo's urban area is built over both a hill-fort (“castro”) and a Roman settlement and has been given the nickname “ciudad olívica” (city of olives). Vigo´s one mile route across the streets of the Old Town, will allow you to discover that the center of Vigo hides a past carved in numerous stone buildings and will help you experience the city’s history on foot. The Vigo estuary is the city’s real treasure: its origin, its engine, its past and its future. Of all the Galician estuaries, ours is the one furthest south of the Rías Baixas and it enters the earth to mix with the river’s water, while the sides of the valley rise to form mountains on the coast’s edge, drawing a myriad of incomparable outlines. The Vigo estuary is protected by the Cíes Islands, a nature park in the middle of the Atlantic and a gateway to the Vigo estuary from the open sea. This is our natural paradise, the sea of Vigo, with its calm waters and exceptionally rich marine life. Nearby cities include Santiago de Compostela, the major pilgrim´s center of West Europe.

We look forward to welcoming you to Vigo for the exciting 3rd International Symposium on Lipid Oxidation and Antioxidants from 10-12 June 2020.

Romanesque architecture of Vigo

The municipality of Vigo is not only one of the major industrial cities in Galicia, but it is also one of the more important Roman centers of Pontevedra. Although within the city one will not find much Romanesque architecture, it can be seen a few kilometers away from the city center. In many of the municipality's neighborhoods and parishes a large number of Roman ruins remain. Such is the importance of the Roman remains in Vigo that many Spanish authors have come to coin the term Romanesque Vigo (románico vigués in Spanish). Vigo retains some interesting examples of Romanesque churches in southern Galicia:

  • Santa Maria de Castrelos
  • Santiago de Bembrive
  • San Salvador de Coruxo

The congress will take place on the

Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (Contemporary Art Museum), MARCO
Principe 54 (pedestrian area)

near the intersection between Colon and Urzaiz St., in the heart of the city of Vigo. You will have the opportunity of going to the excellent museum (free entrance) where there are usually interesting art exhibitions.

This 19th century building was born as a result of the need for the city of Vigo to provide a public prison. What was originally to be a simple prison ended up becoming a courthouse with courts, prisons and a small shelter for the guardians, whose construction ended in 1880. In 1995, a new project was developed to dedicate the property to being the Museum of Contemporary Art (MARCO). After years of work and several million of euros invested in rehabilitation, the Museum was inaugurated in 2002. This irregular hexagonal building has four large rooms with a glazed ceiling (formerly interior courtyards), as well as a central square where the chapel once stood. Its main facade, which overlooks Príncipe Street, stands out for being very slender and for the high plinth that runs through it.

Getting to Vigo is very easy. You can reach Vigo from Madrid, Barcelona, Santiago de Compostela or the north of Portugal. All these cities have airports with connections with a number of major Spanish and European cities. However, as June is a popular month for congresses and tourism, we STRONGLY recommend to make your travel plans as soon as possible.

By plane: the Peinador Airport has connections with Spain’s main cities (Madrid, Barcelona) and several international destinations. A discount (10%) from regular prices will be offered to registered delegates if they choose IBERIA as carrier.

You may find attractive alternative aiports:
- Santiago de Compostela (SCQ, www.aena.es/es/aeropuerto-santiago)
Santiago de Compostela, as pilgrim center, offers connections to different cities in Spain and Europe. If travelling to Santiago, then you can come to Vigo by train (recommended, 50 – 90 min depending on the train) or by bus (1 h)
- Porto (Portugal, OPO: www.aeroportoporto.pt/en/opo/home)

You can then reach Vigo by bus (recommended, 1.5 h) or by train.

By train: Vigo has frequent – high speed – train connections with Madrid. Renfe (the Spanish raiway company, www.renfe.com ) will offer a discount to registered delegates in round trip journeys.
Please -> click <- to receive the authorization PDF file that allows to receive a 35% discount on train tickets for delegates attending the congress.

We remind you that:
the organizer may announce the discount offered by Renfe on the event website, although
the authorization must be sent individually and controlled upon registration of the assistant.
Failure to comply with these regulations will cancel the discount. ONLY registered delegates are eligible for the discount.

To get the discount, attendees must buy their tickets through renfe.com and they must:
1.- Select the train by marking the Flexible Rate.
2.- In the drop-down list, select the Congress / Event rate.
3.- Enter the authorization number in the box indicating authorization number (not valid for discount code box).

By car: Vigo is very well connected with an excellent motorway net with all major cities in Spain and Portugal.

By boat: Getting to Vigo by plane, train or motorway is not your only option. Vigo is one of the few cities where you can travel by boat, enter through the Vigo Estuary, and dock right in the city’s centre.

Walking: Finally, a really exciting and healthy way to reach Vigo is by walking through the Camino de Santiago (the Way of St. James), which is a large network of ancient pilgrim routes stretching across Europe and coming together at the tomb of St. James (Santiago in Spanish) in Santiago de Compostela. Then, you can continue walking to Vigo or take the train or bus.

Please find the way to reach Vigo that best suits you here!
